Norwegian Air Shuttle, the ultra low cost European airline that has angered legacy US carriers, has announced new flights from Europe to the US — via its territories in the Caribbean.

The carrier's announcement was supposed to take place in late March, but was postponed after the Germanwings tragedy. Norwegian is announcing five new weekly frequencies to San Juan, Puerto Rico, along with one to St. Croix. New York and Los Angeles will see increases in their frequencies as well.

San Juan hasn't had flights to the UK since April 2013, when British Airways and Iberia both pulled out alongside American Eagle. Air Europa took over the flights to Madrid, upgrading the service to daily, while service to the UK has been nonexistent.

The idea of flights to Puerto Rico on Norwegian has been around for a while. It was first mentioned in July 2014 when Agustin Arellano, CEO of Aerostar, said that flights to Norway and Sweden would be offered by 2015.

The Puerto Rico Tourism Company has been in talks with Norwegian for a while, likely several months.

The new flights to San Juan, which start in November, will be to Oslo, Stockholm, London-Gatwick, and Copenhagen. St. Croix will also have service to Copenhagen, as the flight is a triangle route. The schedule is as follows:

The schedule for the London-Gatwick flight varies between Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The flights will start in the first week of November. Oslo-San Juan starts on November 1, Stockholm-San Juan starts on November 3, London-San Juan starts on November 4, and Copenhagen-San Juan-St. Croix starts on November 6.
